In T20 cricket, captaincy is very important. When teams play non-stop cricket for about two months in a high-pressure tournament like the Indian Premier League (IPL), this duty becomes even more crucial.
Over the years, we have seen many successful captains in this league, but some have failed miserably. Some of the best captains in IPL have led their respective international teams to great success. This list only included captains who have led at least 25 games. Top captains were selected based on their win rate.
1. Kumar Sangakkara
Kumar Sangakkara has had a terrible season and has been among the worst captains in IPL history. He first joined Kings XI Punjab. Later on, he moved bases to the Deccan Chargers before taking over the newly established team Sunrisers Hyderabad. His record, on the other hand, is far from promising. Sangakkara’s time in the IPL was disappointing; despite leading Sunrisers Hyderabad, Deccan Chargers, and Kings XI Punjab, he only won 15 of 47 games, which gave him the lowest win percentage of any captain with at least 25 games (31.91%).

2. Mahela Jayawardene
Mahele Jayawardene also has a great deal of experience in limited-overs cricket. He won 68 in 126 ODIs as captain. He was also the first to lead Sri Lanka in T20Is. He captained the Delhi Daredevils (now the Delhi Capitals), Kochi Tuskers Kerala, and Kings XI Punjab. But his IPL captaincy hasn’t worked out. The famous batsman won 30 games with three teams, but only won 10.

3. Sourav Ganguly
When you see former famous Indian captain Sourav Ganguly on this list, you might be surprised. He is considered among the greatest coaches ever to have led the Indian team. Dada added an aggressive vibe to the team and taught them how to overcome obstacles and win hard matches. Under his, the side won 21 tests, 11 of which came away from home.
When he took over after the match-fixing controversy, he also led the ODI team for six years. He was quite inspirational and won 76 games out of 146. However, T20 cricket is a different ball game and the Bengal cricketer learnt it the hard way. Ganguly’s leadership with the Pune Warriors India and Kolkata Knight Riders did not result in T20 victory. Ganguly guided his teams to 17 victories out of 42 games, enough for a 40.48% win rate.

4. George Bailey
George Bailey is another outstanding foreign captain in list of ‘Who is bad captain in IPL’ who has struggled in IPL. He played for Australia in 125 international games. Bailey is the only Australian to lead an international game without ever playing at the top level. Tasmanian won 29 ODIs and 28 T20Is for the Kangaroos. He won 16 and 14 games respectively in both these formats.
In 2014, Kings XI Punjab chose him captain due to his strong record. But Bailey was unable to repay the faith, and the team endured some of the most humiliating defeats throughout his tenure. George Bailey, a successful ODI and T20I captain for Australia, had a dismal time leading Kings XI Punjab. Bailey only managed 16 victories out of 36 games, despite his success on the international front. After finishing second in 2014, the team under his direction had a 44.44% victory percentage and finished last in 2015.

5. Rahul Dravid
One of the best cricketers that have ever played for India is Rahul Dravid is also in list of ‘Who is bad captain in IPL’ . He always prioritized the team over himself and followed instructions. He never shied away from responsibilities, whether it was taking wickets or batting at different places. He gladly took on the responsibility of leading the side when requested.
“The Wall” led the squad in 25 Test matches, winning eight and losing six. He has a strong record in ODI cricket as well. Dravid won 42 of the 79 games he led the squad in, which is respectable. However Dravid’s international success was not reflected in his IPL captaincy of the Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore. His victory percentage is 45.83% with 22 victories in 48 games.
